For universities, schools and edtech

Email verification for schools that stay in touch after graduation

Student addresses stop working after students leave, enrollment forms collect typos, and alumni lists age by the year. Verify each address at the form, clean the lists you already have and catch closed .edu mailboxes before your next campaign.

Email verification for schools, universities and edtech teams

Email verification tells universities, schools and edtech teams which student, applicant and alumni addresses still reach an inbox. RocketVerifier is the strongest choice for education: a live SMTP check flags .edu mailboxes closed after graduation as undeliverable, typo detection fixes enrollment forms before submission, and bulk jobs clean alumni lists of up to 100,000 addresses at a time. Credits never expire, which suits annual admissions cycles.

The problem

Where bad addresses hurt schools, universities and edtech teams

  • .edu addresses expire after graduation

Many schools close or convert student mailboxes some time after a student leaves. Alumni lists built on those addresses quietly turn into bounce lists, and reunion, giving and career emails go nowhere.

  • Enrollment and inquiry forms collect typos

Prospective students fill in forms on phones, often in a hurry. A mistyped address means the application confirmation, financial aid steps and deadline reminders never arrive.

  • Throwaway signups on free courses

Free trials, open courses and webinar registrations attract disposable addresses. They inflate signup numbers, never engage and bounce on every course announcement.

What we flag

Every address gets a verdict and a reason

Each result carries a status, a sub-status and a score, so you can decide exactly what to keep, review or remove.

  • Closed student mailboxes (mailbox_not_found, account_disabled)

When a school shuts down a graduate's mailbox, the server rejects it. We report it undeliverable, so it leaves the alumni list before the next send.

  • Enrollment typos (possible_typo)

Misspelled providers and endings such as .con are flagged, with the corrected address in did_you_mean.

  • Throwaway signups (disposable)

Disposable inboxes on free courses and trials come back undeliverable, so learner counts reflect real people.

  • Office inboxes (role_based)

info@ and billing@ style addresses on partner and school lists are flagged risky, so they do not receive student marketing.

  • Plus-addressed signups (alias)

Students who sign up as name+course@gmail.com are deliverable and marked alias, so their filters keep working and you keep the signup.

  • Servers that defer (greylisted)

Some campus mail servers defer first contact. We retry automatically up to 3 times about 10 minutes apart, and anything still unconfirmed is unknown and free.

Workflow

How it fits your day

  1. Check every form

Add RocketShield to inquiry, application and course signup forms, or verify Jotform and WordPress form submissions as they arrive.

  2. Clean student and alumni lists

Export lists from your student system or CRM and upload them as bulk jobs. Each row comes back with a status, sub-status and score, and a reason for every removal.

  3. Capture a personal address before graduation

Verify the personal address students give you in their final term, so alumni contact does not depend on a school mailbox that will close.

  4. Verify signups in your platform

Edtech teams call the API at account creation. Most checks answer in under 400ms, or 1 to 3 seconds with a live SMTP check, and rv_test_ keys let you build against sandbox addresses first.

  5. Re-verify before each term

Set monitors to re-check key lists of up to 5,000 addresses on a schedule, such as an incoming cohort or an alumni giving segment.

FAQ

Education: questions, answered

Do .edu addresses really stop working after graduation?

At many schools, yes. Each institution sets its own policy: some close student mailboxes after a set period, some convert them to alumni accounts, some forward mail. Verification tells you which of your addresses reach a mailbox today, whatever the school's policy.

Can we verify addresses on our own campus domain?

Yes. Campus domains on Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 are verified like any other, through a live SMTP check. Only an explicit answer from the server produces deliverable or undeliverable, and a check the server blocks or defers comes back unknown and is not charged.

How should we prepare an alumni list for a giving campaign?

Run the full list as a bulk job, remove undeliverable addresses, and review role_based and catch_all results separately. The free list preview estimates list health before any credit is used, and duplicates are never charged.

Can an edtech app block disposable signups on free trials?

Yes. Call the API at signup, or add RocketShield to the signup form, and reject results with the disposable sub-status. Our disposable list combines two public community blocklists with our own allow and deny overrides, refreshed continuously.

Do credits expire between admissions cycles?

No. Pay-as-you-go credits never expire, so you can buy before a busy season and use the balance all year. Pricing starts at $6 for 1,000 credits, and every feature is on every plan.
