The verification pipeline

7 checks on every address

Every address runs through syntax, DNS and MX, disposable and role screening, catch-all analysis and a live SMTP handshake. Results we cannot confirm are returned as unknown and never charged.

  1. 1

    Syntax

RFC-compliant format, typo detection and internationalised domains.

  2. 2

    Domain and DNS

    The domain exists and resolves.

  3. 3

    MX records

The domain is set up to receive mail.

  4. 4

    Disposable and role

Throwaway domains and shared inboxes such as info@ and sales@.

  5. 5

    Catch-all analysis

Accept-all servers get a verdict: send safe, send with caution or avoid.

  6. 6

    SMTP mailbox check

A live handshake confirms the mailbox exists, without sending an email.

  7. 7

    Risk signals

    Spam-trap patterns, toxic and do-not-mail addresses, and a 0 to 100 score.

  8. No email is ever sent

Typically under half a second on the API, or 1 to 3 seconds when a live SMTP check is needed.

Results

Four statuses, and the exact reason behind each

Every result has one of four statuses to act on, a sub-status that explains it and a 0 to 100 score. Catch-all addresses also get a send recommendation.

  • Deliverable

    status: "deliverable"

The mailbox exists and accepts mail. Safe to send.

  • Risky

    status: "risky"

Accept-all domains, role addresses or low-quality signals. Send with care.

  • Undeliverable

    status: "undeliverable"

The address will bounce: no mailbox, a dead domain, bad syntax or a disposable domain.

  • Unknown

    status: "unknown"

The mail server would not give a clear answer. Never charged.

Sub-statuses

The precise cause, returned as sub_status in the API, webhooks and exports.

Mailbox

  • mailbox_not_found

The mail server says this mailbox does not exist.

  • account_disabled

The mailbox exists but has been disabled.

  • mailbox_full

The mailbox is over quota and may bounce.

  • alias

    A plus-addressed alias of a real mailbox.

Address and domain

  • does_not_accept_mail

The domain is set up not to receive email.

  • invalid_syntax

The address is not correctly formatted.

  • invalid_domain

    The domain does not exist.

  • dns_error

The domain’s DNS could not be resolved right now.

  • possible_typo

The domain looks like a typo. See did_you_mean.

Server response

  • greylisted

The server asked for a retry later.

  • blocked

The server refused the check for policy reasons.

  • smtp_timeout

The mail server did not answer in time.

Risk signals

  • catch_all

The domain accepts mail for any address.

  • role_based

A shared inbox such as info@ or sales@.

  • disposable

    A temporary, throwaway email domain.

  • possible_trap

    Matches spam-trap patterns.

  • toxic

    Matches known toxic address patterns.

  • do_not_mail

On your suppression list or a known complainer.

Catch-all verdicts

When a domain accepts mail for any address, catch_all_verdict tells you what to do.

  • send_safe

Send safe. Strong signals that the mailbox is real.

  • send_with_caution

Send with caution. Mixed signals. Send in small batches.

  • avoid

Avoid. Unlikely to be a real mailbox.

How catch-all resolution works

Built in

Everything around verification, included

The tools teams need to keep lists clean over time, wire results into their stack and stay in control of spend.

Webhooks

Get notified instead of polling. Subscribe to job completion and failure, low or depleted credits, single verifications and monitor alerts.

  • HMAC-SHA256 signed deliveries
  • Automatic retries with a stable event ID
  • Manage endpoints in the dashboard or API
Webhooks for developers

Suppression list

Keep addresses you must not mail out of every send. Bounces and complaints from your connected email platforms flow in automatically, and you can upload your own.

  • Fed by ESP integrations and manual uploads
  • Suppressed addresses return do_not_mail
  • Suppressed addresses are never charged

Teams and organizations

Bring your whole team into one organization. Share a single pool of credits and create organization API keys that spend from it.

  • Team accounts and organizations
  • Pooled credits across the team
  • Organization-wide IP allowlist for API keys
Included on every plan

Deliverability monitors

Re-verify a saved list on a daily or weekly schedule, and check a sending domain’s SPF, DKIM, DMARC and blacklist status. Get alerted when anything regresses.

  • List health and domain authentication monitors
  • Daily or weekly schedules, or run on demand
  • Alerts through the monitor.alert webhook
How monitoring works

CSV exports

Download any job as a CSV with status, sub-status, score and the rest of the result. Switching providers? The API can export in your previous provider’s column layout, so existing spreadsheets and import rules keep working.

  • Full results for every job
  • Download from the dashboard or the API
  • Provider column layouts for easy migration
Bulk verification

API key controls

Give each key exactly the access it needs. Set a monthly credit spend cap, an expiry date and an IP allowlist, and build against sandbox keys for free.

  • Monthly credit spend caps per key
  • Expiry dates and IP allowlists
  • Sandbox keys that never use credits

FAQ

Features, answered

What checks does RocketVerifier run on each email?

Every address goes through 7 checks: syntax, domain and DNS, MX records, disposable and role screening, catch-all analysis, a live SMTP mailbox check and risk signals such as spam-trap patterns. The SMTP check talks to the mail server without ever sending an email.

How accurate is RocketVerifier?

RocketVerifier verifies with 99.5% accuracy. When a mail server will not give a clear answer, the result is unknown and you are not charged. Connect your sending platform and every hard bounce on an address we marked deliverable is refunded automatically.

Are all features included on every plan?

Yes. The API, bulk verification, RocketShield, integrations, webhooks, monitors, team accounts and API key controls are available on every plan. You only pay for verifications.

What is a sub-status?

The sub-status is the precise reason behind a result, such as mailbox_not_found, catch_all, role_based or greylisted. It appears in the dashboard, the API, webhooks and CSV exports, so you can filter and act on the exact cause.
