ActiveCampaign bounce and complaint limits
From ActiveCampaign's own help center and policies, checked November 1, 2026.
| Metric | Limit | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Bounce rate | No published number | Accounts with abnormal bounce rates may be put under review. Too many bounces during campaign approval can trigger a review that holds campaigns. Source |
| Complaints and unsubscribes | No published number | Above-average complaint rates and abnormal unsubscribes also lead to review. Source |
How ActiveCampaign handles bounces and imports
- A hard bounce sets the contact to Bounced immediately, and no further campaigns or automations reach it.
- Three soft bounces in a row, from three different campaigns, also set the contact to Bounced.
- Paid, rented and borrowed lists are not allowed. Imports from another provider must still be opt-in.
- When migrating, ActiveCampaign recommends importing previously bounced contacts as excluded.
Clean your ActiveCampaign list with the integration
No exports. Results are written straight back to ActiveCampaign.
- 1
In RocketVerifier, open Dashboard, Integrations, ActiveCampaign, paste your ActiveCampaign API key and click Connect.
- 2
Choose all contacts or any list.
- 3
Turn on write-back: custom fields for the result, status tags, and unsubscribes for undeliverable addresses.
- 4
Preview the breakdown, then sync now or on a schedule.
- 5
Use the status tag as a condition in automations so risky contacts are routed separately.
Or clean it by file
- 1
In ActiveCampaign, export the contacts from the Contacts page.
- 2
Upload the file to RocketVerifier as a bulk job and download the results.
- 3
Re-import the deliverable and send_safe contacts as active, and import the undeliverable ones as excluded so they are never emailed again.
What to keep and what to remove
| Status | Sub-status | Action |
|---|---|---|
| deliverable | none, alias | Keep and send. |
| risky | catch_all, send_safe | Keep and send. |
| risky | catch_all, send_with_caution | Send to engaged contacts, or in smaller batches. |
| risky | role_based, mailbox_full | Keep only if they opted in and engage. |
| risky | catch_all avoid, possible_trap, toxic | Remove. |
| undeliverable | any | Unsubscribe or suppress. |
| unknown | greylisted, blocked, smtp_timeout | Hold and re-verify later. Never charged. |
Tips for ActiveCampaign
- Verify before migrating to ActiveCampaign. Clean data makes the first campaigns sail through approval.
- ActiveCampaign treats mailbox full as a soft bounce. RocketVerifier flags those addresses as risky with the mailbox_full sub-status, often a sign the inbox is abandoned.
- Tag catch-all contacts by verdict and mail send_with_caution contacts in smaller batches.
